A Southampton-based care facility, Carpathia Grange, has unveiled its new namaste hub, aimed at offering specialized care for individuals in advanced stages of dementia.

The team at Care UK’s Carpathia Grange, situated on Southampton Road, hosted an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the namaste hub, with New Forest District Council Chairman, Councillor Neville Penman, gracing the occasion. The event was marked by a performance from the local choir, The Jingle Ladies.

The recently established area within the care home has been purposefully crafted to provide personalized Namaste Care in a tranquil environment, primarily for those with advanced dementia. 'Namaste' originates from Hindu culture and signifies 'honoring the spirit within,' aligning with the core principles of this approach. Namaste Care focuses on engaging individuals through their senses and emotions, particularly harnessing the power of touch.

The team members have undergone comprehensive training to conduct Namaste Care sessions effectively. Activities like hand and foot massages, music therapy, themed sensory and movement sessions, and simple conversations aimed at encouraging reminiscence are conducted in the serene atmosphere created within the namaste hub.

Namaste Care has proven effective in soothing individuals with dementia by providing them with soft music in a relaxing setting, which helps reduce agitation. It also enhances the job satisfaction of team members, facilitating their connection and communication with residents, even in cases where verbal communication is challenging.

Pooja Dhoot, Home Manager at Carpathia Grange, shared, “Since we introduced the Namaste Care program, our team members have dedicated themselves to becoming proficient Namaste Care Practitioners, conducting sessions for small groups of residents four times a week. We have observed remarkable improvements in the well-being of those living with dementia.

“The feedback from residents has been overwhelmingly positive, leading us to extend these sessions to individuals with less advanced dementia and other care requirements. There is no substitute for quality, focused, one-on-one interaction, making this dedicated space invaluable.

"We were delighted to have Councillor Neville Penman, Chairman of the New Forest District Council, join us for the official inauguration of the namaste care hub, providing him with insights into how this space enhances the residents' well-being.”

Carpathia Grange is a three-story care facility offering residential, dementia, and nursing care. It boasts 62 en-suite bedrooms and has been thoughtfully designed to promote active and fulfilling lives for its residents, while also encouraging independence. The care home offers dedicated spaces for hobbies and leisure activities, including a cinema, a hair salon, and a café.
